The town of Dambulla is located in Sri Lanka's Central Province's Matale District. In the Matale District, it is the second most populous and urbanized center after Matale. It is 148 kilometers northeast of Colombo, 43 kilometers from Matale, and 72 kilometers from Kandy.
King Kashyapa constructed the historic citadel that is Sigiriya in the fifth century. The ruins of an upper palace, which were on the flat top of the rock, a mid-level terrace, which included the Lion Gate and the mirror wall with its murals, and lower palaces, which clung to the slopes below the rocks, are all found at the Sigiriya site. From the base of the cliff, the moats, fortifications, and gardens of the palace stretched for a few hundred meters
The Minneriya National Park first began its operations in 1938 as a Wildlife Sanctuary, and later in 1997 it was designated as a national park. Situated in the dry zone, the park receives between just 1500 - 2000 millimeters of annual rainfall.The wildlife in the park include 24 species of mammals, 160 species of birds, 9 species of amphibians, 25 species of reptiles, 26 species of fish, and 75 species of butterflies.
